Norco, CA - The CNUSD Special Education Department welcomed families to an engaging evening of learning, connection, and support during its “All-Star Parent Night: Summer of Success – Positive Parent Strategies” event held April 30 at the District office.
Designed around a fun sports theme, the event created a warm and encouraging environment where families could gather practical tools to help their children continue growing throughout the summer months. Parents and caregivers rotated through three interactive breakout sessions focused on individualized strategies, home supports, and positive behavior practices tailored to meet students’ unique needs.
Throughout the evening, Special Education staff emphasized that summer can be an important opportunity for continued growth and independence. Families were encouraged to review their child’s Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals and identify two to three priority skills to strengthen over the break, particularly in areas that support independence and functional development.
Families also explored simple, effective ways to support learning at home, including creating predictable routines, using visual schedules, and turning everyday activities into meaningful learning opportunities. Staff shared strategies for setting clear expectations and using positive reinforcement systems such as praise, reward tokens, preferred activities, and tangible incentives to encourage success.
In addition, the sessions highlighted calming and coping strategies for students, while also underscoring the benefits of physical activity, including swimming, biking, and outdoor play, to support sensory needs, focus, and emotional regulation.
Community organizations including Empowered Pathways, Fun First LLC, and the City of Corona participated in the event, providing families with information about adaptive recreation programs, summer opportunities, and inclusive community activities available throughout the region.
To continue supporting families beyond the event, the District is also sharing the Community Resource Catalog, which provides ongoing access to helpful services, programs, and supports outside of the school system.
